Small birds can safely bathe in the 1.5" deep basin, while large birds can drink and preen. 

The three-dimensional sailboat becomes the gnomon, (the projecting piece on a sundial that shows the time by the position of its shadow,) and when oriented celestial north, the sail casts a shadow over the Roman numerals, indicating the time.
