Cleaning Outdoor Poly Furniture
Poly is an artificial material that is created using high density polyethylene (HDPE). This material is derived from recycled plastic items, such as milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, and water bottles. HDPE is well-known for its strength. Therefore, it is a popular option for making materials for industrial and commercial use.
HDPE is derived from recycled plastic. It is a strong and durable material. This makes it suitable for many uses. Poly is easy to take care of and is practically maintenance free.
The difference between traditional outdoor wooden furniture and poly is that poly is naturally weather resistant and easy to clean. You will never have to waste valuable time sanding, refinishing, or resealing your poly furniture. Of course, just like anything left outside, it will get dirty with mold and mildew. There are a few simple ways to clean poly lumber furniture and remove dirt and debris.
First, for general cleanup, fill a bucket with warm water. Gather mild dish soap, a sponge, and a hose; you are all set. Just like washing your car after a rain shower, start with a soapy sponge, and from the top down, clean all surfaces and nooks and crannies.
Then, rinse the furniture with clean water from the hose and allow it to dry before using it again. Some people will simply use a magic eraser.
Mix a combination of 1/3 bleach with 2/3 fresh water in a bucket. This is necessary if you live in an area with heavy pollen or dust. Wash with this solution just like you would with dish soap and water in a bucket.
There is no need to worry about the bleach discoloring your patio furniture. Once you are done washing, rinse with the hose and watch as each piece is restored to its original brilliance.
You may also use a pressure washer to clean outdoor furniture if it does not exceed 1,500 PSI. If any higher, you may cause damage to the material. After using the power washer, any residual dirt can be loosened with a soft bristle brush and rinsed away. Please make sure you remove any outdoor cushions before you start.
Finally, most poly pieces are assembled with stainless steel hardware. If the hardware starts to rust or corrode, first wash it with soap and warm water using a bristle brush to see if you restore the shine to your liking. A commercial rust remover can be used if necessary.
Now that you have turned your yard into a clean, outdoor living space, you can entertain and enjoy family and friends, or just relax in nature after a busy day, as you make new memories, for years to come.
