Chicago Bistro's French Onion Soup, with black lentils and sliced onions, offers nutritional value and depth not usually found in a standard French onion soup. This soup is gluten-free and delicious alone, but even better with French bread and cheese on top. It is ready to enjoy in just 50 minutes.

Cooking directions for the Chicago Bistro French Onion Soup Mix

• Peel the onion and cut into quarters. Then cross cut quarters to form narrow semi-circle slices.
• In a 4 quart pot, melt the butter and sauté the onions 10 minutes, or to caramelize onion, add 1 teaspoon sugar and continue to cook for 10 minutes until golden brown.
• Stir in the French Onion Soup Mix and stir 30 seconds.
• Add broth, apple cider or juice, and Worcestershire sauce.
• Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for 40 minutes.
• Serve as is or may top each bowl with croutons and Gruyere cheese.
• Makes about 8 servings

• 1/2 cup of apple cider or apple juice
• 2 tbsp. of Worcestershire sauce
• Optional items to consider
• 1 tsp of sugar
